in defense of PINK
What is with the colour PINK?
Quite frankly, I am suspicious of any person that loudly proclaims their dislike for it and adamantly insist on rejecting the colour altogether.
I would also ask if there is any other colour that has received the same amount of unbridled contempt, usually beginning on the elementary playground. Give the poor colour some slack already.
Why does one loudly disdain the colour pink? I think it is obvious, but the need to conform to society conventions will always and forever irritate me - and yes, intentionally going AGAINST any given norm is still conformity - one could argue that it is conformity at its best. To NOT like pink because you think you are being told to LIKE pink and it means you are a part of the ‘weaker’ sex is utter nonsense.
“intentionally going AGAINST any given norm is still conformity - one could argue that it is conformity at its best.”
Do sunrises and sunsets belong to only one half of the population? Their pink hue defined by traits imposed by cultural whiplash?
Colour psychology purports that while pink can be an intense colour, the tinted version of red, it is actually very difficult to be angry while surrounded by shades of pink. Hence the phrase ‘rose coloured glasses’. However, your senses will be heightened. Pink is soft on the eyes and invites feelings of vigour and wholeness.
So, I challenge your ‘I HATE pink’ assertion and ask ‘do you really?’… or are you letting people tell you what to like and dislike? Maybe the colour pink is not to be blamed for all the weight it has been assigned? Give the dear colour a break already!
When I first made the Feminist Crown Sewing Pattern, I had these thoughts in mind. I was so tired of being told what I could and could not be based on imposed ideas. I was also weary of my kids inevitably coming home in about grade one with loud declaration that they disliked pink. The playground antics had struck again. I wanted Pippa, my youngest, to feel free to imagine without supposed notions - like pink belongs to the feminine gender and is by association weak and boring. Pink is whatever you decide it is - mighty, fierce, soft, wise, calming, strong…
Fun fact - that pattern was chosen to be one of the top ten finalist for the Etsy Design Awards in 2020! I was stunned and had barely started putting my patterns out there. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE TREAT.
