Let’s play with yarn and the Pixie Bonnet…
Over the past year, I have had other knitting enthusiasts reach out to me and ask if Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick is a good option for the Pixie Bonnet…
It is an EXCELLENT question. Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick is a hobby yarn and a fabulous fibre to learn knitting with. It is soft and easy to see the stitches as you knit.
So… I put the yarn to the test.
The yarns recommended for the Pixie Bonnet are:
Estelle Bulky
Hobbii Tweed (2 strands held together)
Drops Air (2 strands held together).
Estelle Bulky and Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick are in the same weight category… so naturally one would assume they would knit relatively similar gauges.
Sadly, yarns do not work like that! That would be far to simple.
Below is a comparison of the Pixie Bonnet knit with Lion Brand Wool Ease in red and Hobbii Tweed (2 strands held together) in charcoal tweed.
NOTES:
The bonnets above are both the largest size.
The red one, knit with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick has 32 rows for the main bonnet section, instead of the recommended 34 in the pattern as it reached the recommended 9” (23 cm) with 32 rows.
To accommodate the lesser amount of stitches on the Lion Brand bonnet, only 51 stitches were picked along the front ribbing, instead of 55 stitches.
The bonnet knit with Lion brand is stiffer and chunkier in texture. The Hobbii Tweed is softer and more pliable. The red one would be a lovely hood over a toque. The bottom ribbing of the red bonnet is quite looser and not closely fitted to the base of the head, like the charcoal tweed one.
